Explanation: minimum wage and youth wage in Belgium
In Belgium there is no statutory minimum wage as in the Netherlands. The national floor is the guaranteed average minimum monthly income (GMMMI) from NAR CLA no. 43 (18+) and the youth/student scales from CLA no. 50. Sector pay scales of the joint committee are often higher. Want to know the employer cost or the net salary? Use the employer cost calculator or gross-to-net.
Frequently asked questions
How high is the GMMMI in 2026?
According to NAR CLA no. 43/18, the GMMMI from 1 April 2026 is €2,189.81 gross a month for 18+. After indexation (pivot index June 2026), the level from 1 July 2026 is €2,233.61. Always check the current indexation.
Do lower amounts apply to young people?
Yes. CLA no. 50 provides for percentages of the GMMMI: 67% (16 and younger), 73% (17), and for student contracts 79% (18), 85% (19) and 90% (20). With an ordinary employment contract from 18, 100% applies.
Is the GMMMI the same as a minimum monthly wage?
Not exactly. It is an average monthly income over the calendar year: the year-end bonus or 13th month counts when checking whether the GMMMI is reached.
Does my sector pay scale take precedence?
Sector minimums of the joint committee are often higher than the GMMMI. Those pay scales apply alongside or instead of the national floor; always check the employer’s joint committee.
Does the Dutch minimum hourly wage apply in Belgium?
No. Belgian wages follow collective agreements (national and sectoral), not the Dutch statutory minimum wage (WML).
Note: indicative, not advice
This calculation is an indication based on general statutory rules and 2026 rates and does not constitute tax, legal or payroll advice. This is not pay advice. Sectoral joint committees (PC) can set higher — and for young people sometimes different — minimums; they take precedence over or apply alongside CLA 50. The GMMMI is an annual average. Always check the pay scale of your joint committee and the current indexation. No rights can be derived from this result.
